Sunday, June 22nd was the Austin Cool House Tour 2008 which is produced by the Solar Energy Society and the Austin Energy Green Building groups. Eighteen homes were selected for the tour and all were wonderful examples of how we can blend sustainable building practices and create works of incredible beauty within an urban environment. One new construction even featured a pier and beam foundation to protect the roots of a huge (40′ diameter) live oak tree which shades the home. This was just one example of the many ways in which builders, owners, and architects are coming together to create beautiful, unique energy efficient sustainable living spaces in the limited spaces of a city lot. It is clear evidence that Austin is on the leading edge of “Going Green”. It was truly a pleasure to see as many as one could of these homes where environmental concerns and living spaces are transformed seamlessly into a work of art that also happily functions as someone’s home. The home owners, builders, and industry professionals were on hand to answer questions and to warmly welcome the large groups that poured into their private living spaces all in a mere 6 hours on Sunday. For more info, log onto txses.org. You can also peruse the entire cool house book which is available as a pdf file. The Texas Solar Energy Society is a wonderful local resource for building or remodeling green!
