Clifford Antone founded the original club in 1975 according to the official site, “at 6th and Brazos in an old furniture warehouse with zydeco king Clifton Chenier. Bringing in the blues and soul legends of the day such as Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Fats Domino, Sunnyland Slim, Hubert Sumlin, Eddie Taylor, Walter “Shakey” Horton, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Pinetop Perkins, Albert King, James Cotton, Calvin Jones, Willie “Big Eye” Smith, Bobby Blue Bland, and B.B. King made Antone’s the premier blues club in Texas”.

This past Wednesday night (July 16) was where the 600 or so of us fortunate enough to get advance tickets for James Hunter’s sold out show were in “blues heaven” as Hunter and his incredible band entertained us for nearly two hours. It was well worth the wait! If you haven’t heard of James Hunter, then do yourself a favor and check out this incredible bluesman’s music. Hunter is a native of Colchester, England and was discovered by Van Morrison who he later toured with and the rest, as they say, is blues history. He has performed at ACL twice now, at La Zona Rosa, and now at Antones. As this late Wednesday night crowd attested, he is worth every penny of your ticket or CD dollar and (definitely worth losing a few hours of sleep on a week night). His new CD, The Hard Way, was recently named No. 1 on the Billboard Charts and has held the No. 1 spot for over 5 weeks now! Check out this incredible man and his music at www.jameshuntermusic.com and get on his mailing list. Then, the next time he comes anywhere near you, get those tickets in advance and go for a treat of a lifetime! Hunter will be touring in the states in August with Chris Issak and then it is back to England. If you haven’t heard his Grammy nominated 2006, CD, entitled “People Gonna Talk“, it is definitley one to own, along with this newest one(The Hard Way) which was just released July 2008. “People Gonna Talk” brought Hunter to the States where he became “an overnight sensation which was 20 years in the making”. It was his first stateside CD and the first time he came to Austin. Aren’t we just so incredibly blessed to live here? Here is the title track from that CD 01-people-gonna-talk Enjoy and then check out his new one The Hard Way. It is easy to understand after one listen why it is still No. 1 on the Billboard charts.
